The Foundation Trust Network represents all existing foundation trusts as well as many of those aspiring to foundation trust status. The Foundation Trust Network's role is to support the development of these organisations as they grow to fulfil their new responsibilities.

The Healthcare Commission became operational on 1st April 2004. It replaces the Commission for Health Improvement and the National Care Standards Commission (in respect of private and voluntary healthcare) and also takes over functions of the Audit Commission (in respect of national studies of efficiency, effectiveness and economy).

The provisions of the Health and Social Care (Community Health and Standards) Act 2003, which relate both to Monitor and to NHS foundation trusts, were repealed on 1 March 2007 and re-enacted on that date in a consolidating act, the National Health Service Act 2006.
